Why You Should Reconsider Making Aftermarket Modifications To Your Car

Posted on: 2 May 2016

If you love your car, you might want to do things to make it a bit more personalized. However, before you start making aftermarket modifications to your car, there are a few things that you should consider. These are a few reasons why this might not be something that you will want to do.

It Could Affect the Value

Sure, it's true that cars are generally considered a depreciating asset. However, there are things that can cause a car to depreciate in value even faster, such as by making modifications. If you want to be able to resell your car or trade it in for as much as possible, it might be a good idea to reconsider aftermarket modifications that can't be undone.

It Could Affect Your Warranty

Another thing to think about is your vehicle warranty. Some modifications can affect other parts of your car; for example, lifting your vehicle can cause damage to the suspension. If you want to be able to use your warranty to pay for any damage to your car, you may want to ask someone from your car dealership about whether or not the modifications that you want to make will affect your warranty. If they will, you may want to wait before making these changes, or you may want to ask about having modifications done at the dealership, where they may not affect your warranty.

Your Insurance Company Might Object

Did you know that there is a chance that your insurance company will have a problem with you making aftermarket modifications to your car? This is because some enhancements that people make to their cars actually make them more appealing to thieves, such as expensive rims or a nice stereo system. If you are planning on making a major modification to your vehicle, you may want to talk to your insurance agent first to find out how it will affect your insurance policy. Your insurance rates might go up, for example, or certain modifications might not be covered. For example, your insurance company might not pay out if your rims are stolen unless you pay for an additional rider to protect them.

As you can see, it isn't always a good idea to make aftermarket modifications to your vehicle, no matter how cool they might seem. When having work done to your car, you might find that you are better off having it done by a certified mechanic who is certified to work on your particular make and model of vehicle (such as one from Wolfe's Foreign Auto).
