Common Causes Of A Failed Transmission

Posted on: 28 July 2016

Transmissions are one of those car parts that's notoriously costly to fix. So knowing how to avoid transmission maintenance is valuable for protecting your wallet. Here are some of the common issues that can lead to transmission trouble.

Overheating the Vehicle.

Your transmission should never reach over 200 degrees. This can cause the part to malfunction and the oil to quickly evaporate, leaving the parts to rub together and cause damage. The best thing to do is to make sure that you visit an auto repair and maintenance center on a regular basis to make sure that your engine is in good repair, so that you can avoid the overheating that leads to all sorts of part damage.

Not Allowing the Engine to Heat Properly

At the same time, your car can't operate correctly when the fluids haven't had a chance to heat up properly. Especially in the winter months, it's important to give the car a few minutes to heat up before taking off so that the fluids are at the correct operating temperature.

Leaving Your Fluids Low

Make sure that your mechanic replaces your transmission fluid on a regular basis, so that you can keep all of the transmission parts well-lubricated during operations. If you ever hear a noise that sounds like parts grinding together while you're driving, you might suspect that your transmission fluid is low. Take the car to an automotive shop to check; a quart of new fluid is much less costly than an entire transmission replacement.

Stopping Suddenly

Making emergency stops can wreak havoc on your transmission mounts, not to mention your brakes. Be sure to stop gradually. If you are forced to ever make an emergency stop, it's a good idea to have your mechanic check out the car to make sure there was no transmission damage. Catching a transmission problem early on can save you from making a full replacement.

Not Repairing Quickly

If you suspect a problem with your transmission, it's important to take the car into an auto repair shop as soon as possible. There may be some home remedy options that you find online or through word of mouth, such as chemical additives to stop transmission leaks, but these can do more harm than good if they don't really address the cause of your transmission issues. Your automotive shop will do a thorough evaluation to find and correct the sources of transmission troubles.
