Tips For Maintaining A Safe Environment When Performing Hydraulic Repair

Posted on: 11 May 2016

If you are trying to perform some do-it-yourself auto maintenance, you are going to need to make sure that you uphold certain safety measures in order to keep an environment that is going to be conducive to work in. Here are some tips for maintaining a safe environment when performing hydraulic repair.

1. Don't Use Your Fingers to Look for Leaks

If you know that the hose in your hydraulics system has a leak and this is the source of your automobile woes, you are going to need to make sure that you locate that leak as quickly as possible. It might be tempting to simply take your finger and run it down the hose to see where you can feel air or liquid coming out. However, you don't know the temperature of the air or liquid that is going to come out of the hose. You risk accidentally burning yourself. Instead of using your finger to look for leaks, take a thin piece of cardboard and run it along the hose. If liquid is coming out of the hose, you will be able to tell that your cardboard is right over it because of the damp spot that you can see. If air is coming out of the hose, your cardboard will be pushed up by its force. This will allow you to find the leak but avoid being injured.

2. Keep Low Pressure Hoses Away From High Pressure Systems

You might have a hose that is suitable for low pressure systems but attach it to a high pressure system. This could cause the hose to be damaged and let out the liquid or air that you are trying to pump through it. This could result in someone being injured. Make sure that you keep track of the pressure of the system that you are working on and ensure that you choose a hose that matches. Keep all of your hoses clearly labeled with the level of pressure that they are able to withstand.

3. Oil the Cylinder Rods

Finally, make sure that you regularly apply oil to the cylinder rods while you are working in order to prevent their malfunction. Too much friction due to not enough lubrication could lead to the cylinder rods breaking and possible shooting parts at you.
